Grades...Please make sure all make up work is done and turned in by Friday for partial credit. The end of the Trimester is quickly approaching. We are working on a slide show this week about the Ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia. They can access it in Google Classroom. We are also working on an extended writing assignment in ELA. They will have a completed 5 paragraph essay about the unit we are finishing about Turning Points in characters' lives. Our goal is to be finished in 2 weeks.
CONFERENCES: Please come to parent teacher conferences on
Wednesday Oct. 11 from 12:30-3:00 or
Thursday Oct. 12 from 12:30-3:00 and 4:00-7:00
If the student comes with you, they get a free pass for Reading Plus homework for the week!
Reading Plus awards were done last week, and they LOVED getting prizes! I heard many kids say they were going to do more reading plus now. Phew, success!

The end of the week is here, and we have gotten through another busy week. We are into our new unit on Mesopotamia, which is the first civilization. We worked on a story about Jackie Robinson, and we read and discussed a poem by Robert Frost called The Road Not Taken. If you haven't heard, Mr. Sanchez (our Assistant Principal) is going to be the new principal of Coachella Valley High School. We wish him well in his new job. I will be helping in the office on Thursday and Friday so I will have a substitute in the classroom. I will still be on campus so I will be able to pop in and check on them. Continue on with Reading Plus. On Monday, I will be doing my monthly awards/prizes for combos and levels passed.

Grades have been posted for progress reports. Please check them and plan on coming to conferences to discuss. Conferences are October 11th from 12:30-3:00 and October 12th from 12:30-3:00 and 4:00-7:00. I will be in the library. If you are new to middle school conferences, you show up at the time that works best for you, go to the hallway by the library, pick up the progress report, and then come talk to the teachers. Sometimes there will be a line. If there is a line, I will try to make each conference as short as possible, but understand there are often pressing things that need to be discussed. Also, I will have printed newer progress reports by the time conferences roll around, so they will be up to date. Unlike elementary school, these are not final. We do them so that students may fix anything that needs fixing so their grades can be improved before report cards.
MAKE SURE READING PLUS HOMEWORK IS GETTING DONE...LAST WEEK MANY STUDENTS DID NOT DO THEIR ASSIGNMENTS AND IT BROUGHT THEIR GRADES DOWN. THE ONLY WAY TO FIX IT IS TO DO THE ASSIGNMENTS. IF THEY DO WHAT IS ASKED OF THEM FROM HERE ON OUT, I WILL EXCUSE THE LOWEST WEEK'S SCORES.

So I missed my first Thursday update, but I suppose better late than never! This week we visited the library and checked out books so they have something to read nightly. We also worked on a Holiday Banner contest for the City of Palm Springs. This was the first week I have required them to do Reading Plus for homework. Most students have not completed the assignments as of Friday afternoon. They have until Sunday at 11:59 PM until the assignments close for the week. Grading period for progress reports is closing Wednesday. I need any makeups by Monday or Tuesday. Thank you for checking in. Also, see who is the current leader on Reading Plus combos!

Hello there. I am trying a website/blog to see if I can improve communication between us. I will do a weekly update to let you know what we have done as well as info feeds for important things.
SOCIAL STUDIES: This week we have started working on Early Man Pocket Books. We are working on this in class, but they may have to finish up things at home. If they use their time and are efficient, they should have no homework from this. I generally don't assign extra homework. The standard homework is Reading Plus and reading a novel. I have explained it further above on the Reading Plus tab.
CHROMEBOOKS were checked out today! They are super excited. Please remember to charge them every night. Leave the chargers at home. Bring the computers to school every day fully charged and ready to use. When in P.E. please make sure you put your computer in your locker.
ELA: We have wrapped up the introduction to the new reading and writing program (Study Sync). Next week we will start with Unit 1, called Turning Points. We will begin with a selection from the story Hatchet.
CONFERENCES: Please come to parent teacher conferences on
Wednesday Oct. 11 from 12:30-3:00 or
Thursday Oct. 12 from 12:30-3:00 and 4:00-7:00
